Dr. Thomas is an associate professor of Clinical Internal Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and serves as the chief clinical officer for The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Dr. Thomas provides oversight for patient care services, medical staff administration, and quality and safety initiatives throughout the Wexner Medical Center, and is co-chair of the New Hospital Tower project.

Previously, Dr. Thomas served as chief medical officer for the Wexner Medical Center from 2013-17, medical director of University Hospitals from 2010-13, assistant/associate medical director for University Hospitals from 1999-2010, and assistant/associate dean for Graduate Medical Education from 2001-10. Dr. Thomas is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Thomas coordinates medical center-wide initiatives related to clinical operations, population health, clinical practice transformation, quality, patient safety and patient experience. His engagement includes the alignment of hospitals, physicians and advanced practice providers in addition to oversight of medical administration and the medical staff. Additionally, Dr. Thomas holds the position of associate dean for Physician Relations, where he collaborates closely with the dean on issues of provider and faculty satisfaction.

Dr. Thomas is a nationally recognized leader in graduate medical education. From 2012-18, he was named to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s Clinical Learning Environment Review Committee, which is working to improve the interaction between graduate medical education and quality/safety programs within teaching hospitals. He also served on the council’s Institutional Review Committee from 2004-12.

In 2012, he was named to the Steering Committee of the Chief Medical Officers Group of the Association of American Medical Colleges. Over the past 15 years, Dr. Thomas has served on the governing boards for the American Medical Association, Ohio State Medical Association and the Columbus Medical Association, including a term as president of the Columbus Medical Association from 2007-08.

Originally from Louisville, Ohio, in Stark County, Dr. Thomas completed his undergraduate degree at Harvard University. Since coming to Ohio State, he has completed both his medical degree and his Internal Medicine residency. During a two-year Quality Improvement Fellowship, he also completed an MBA at Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business.

Dr. Thomas, his wife Lisa, and their three children live in Northwest Columbus.
