William Farrar, MD, is a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University where he received his BA in Biology. He received his medical degree at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville before starting his internship at The Ohio State University. As a surgical resident at Ohio State in 1975, Dr. Farrar was mentored by Dr. Arthur G. James, the namesake of The James. It was Dr. James himself, a respected cancer surgeon, who urged Dr. Farrar to pursue surgical oncology.

Following a two-year fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Dr. Farrar was recruited back to Ohio State in 1982. Dr. Farrar was appointed Division Chief of Surgical Oncology in 1985-2012, Director of Medical Affairs at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute in 1989-2011 and the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center Director in 2011, which he continues to do. He also holds the Arthur G. James/Richard J. Solove Chair in Surgical Oncology.

Dr. Farrar has had a long history with the Wexner Medical Center and James Cancer Hospital. He is one of the country’s foremost experts in breast cancer and is widely recognized in the central Ohio cancer community. He is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and has been the principal investigator on several grants and pivotal clinical trials in breast cancer.

Dr. Farrar has held many leadership positions on the national and local levels in many professional organizations and societies, such as serving as the Medical Director for the Columbus Cancer Clinic and the Program Committee Director for the Society of Head and Neck Surgeons. He has held memberships with professional organizations, such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and the U.S. National Committee for the International Union Against Cancer in which he was the President. Dr. Farrar’s knowledge and experiences have provided him the opportunities to speak at many medical conferences around the country.

Dr. Farrar and his wife, Kathryn, reside in Dublin, Ohio. They have four children (William, Elizabeth, Caroline and Kathryn) and four grandchildren (Avery, Annabelle, Andrew and Whitney).
