Former Trustees

Shirley Dunlap Bowser, of Williamsport, OH, served as chairperson of the The Ohio State University Board of Trustees from 1990-91. She was appointed to the board by Governor James A. Rhodes on May 14, 1982, for a nine-year term.

Mrs. Bowser served as a trustee of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation from 1986-2001, serving as Board Chair in 2000 and 2001. In 2005, the Foundation appointed her as trustee of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Trust.

She was appointed by Governor Rhodes to the Recreation and Resources Commission of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources in 1977, and was elected chairwoman the following year.  Mrs. Bowser served for three years as supervisor of the Pickaway County Soil and Water Conservation District and was a member of the Pickaway County Planning Commission.  She also served on the Central Ohio Council for the development of the Central Ohio Water Plan and the Ohio 4-H Foundation board of Directors. She is past president and member of the Westfall Board of Education and worked as media librarian for the elementary schools in the Westfall Local School District for many years.

As a member of the Board of Trustees of Ohio State, Mrs. Bowser served as the Board's representative to the University's Hospital Board from 1984-1990.

A native of Williamsport, she was awarded the Bachelor of Science degree in education from Ohio State in 1956.  While at OSU, she was president and member of Alpha Lamda Delta, and a member of Mirrors, Chimes and Mortar Board honor societies. In 1991 she was inducted into both the Bucket and Dipper and Sphinx honoraries.

Mrs. Bowser is married to Clifford L. Bowser and has two adult children.

David L. Brennan served as chairman of the Board of Trustees for 2001-02. He is a 1953 graduate of The Ohio State University and a recipient of a Juris Doctor Degree from Case Western Reserve Law School in 1957. In 1985 he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Akron. Headquartered in Akron, Ohio, Brennan is chair of Brennan Industrial Group, Inc., and The Brenlin Group, Inc., both of which are private holding companies of industrial and manufacturing entities. He is a founder of the law firm Brennan Manna and Diamond LLC.

Education is a passion for Brennan, chairman of White Hat Management LLC. As a CEO in the manufacturing world, Brennan saw firsthand the realities of American education. He established Learning Centers at his manufacturing and industrial sites to help his employees overcome education deficits and increase their capacity for success.

His experiences with the Learning Centers led him deeper into the field of education. In addition to serving on the Board of Trustees at The Ohio State University, he is a Trustee at Case Western Reserve School of Law (1957). He has also established law chairs at Case and the University of Akron.

In 1992 then Ohio Governor George Voinovich was looking for someone to head a blue-ribbon commission on education. He tapped David Brennan. The Governor's commission forwarded a plan that led to significant new opportunities in educational choice across Ohio. In 1997 Brennan received The Governor's Award for his unique contributions in the field of education.

David Brennan has served public schools, private schools, sectarian and non-sectarian schools, voucher schools, and charter schools. He helped develop private and public scholarship funds, programs, and schools for needy children in urban school districts throughout the state. In 1998 Brennan founded White Hat Management a professional educational services firm. In just three brief years White Hat has helped institute 12 new charter schools in Ohio, including eight elementary schools and seven LifeSkills high school programs.

LifeSkills may be Brennan's most enduring contribution to the field of education. A unique blend of successful educational components, LifeSkills helps young people who have already dropped out of high school get back to school and gain a high school diploma, as well as valuable on-the-job experience. LifeSkills high schools in Ohio, which began in September 1999, have graduated 985 students to date.

Brennan has built his home and businesses from his life-long residence in Akron, Ohio. He and his wife, Ann, are the parents of four and share the joys of ten grandchildren.

Deborah E. Casto was appointed by Governor Richard Celeste to the Board of Trustees in 1985, and served as chair of the board from 1993-94.

Theodore S. Celeste of Columbus served on the Board of Trustees from 1990-99, and as chair of the board in 1998-99.  He is president of Celeste & Associates Real Estate Inc., a residential real estate company in Grandview Heights. He is a member of the Columbus Board of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors.

Celeste was the founder and chair of Advanced Interactive Video, Inc., and president of the National Housing Corporation, New Town Housing, and the Columbus Magic Soccer Team.

He chairs the Personnel Committee and serves on the Science and Technology Campus Corporation Board.  He has previously served as chair of the Agricultural Affairs Committee, the Educational Affairs Committee, the Fiscal Affairs Committee, and the Affiliated Entities Committee.  He has also served on the Research Foundation Board, the University Foundation Board, The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital Board, the University Hospitals Board, the University Managed Health Care Board, and the Lima Regional Campus Board.  This year Celeste was initiated into the Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society as an honorary member.

Celeste earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the College of Wooster.  His wife, Bobbie, recently received her Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Ohio State. The Celestes have two daughters, Christiana, 25, and Liz, 16.

They are active members of First Community Church. In addition, the Celestes served as Peace Corps volunteers in the Fiji Islands.

Michael F. Colley of Columbus was chair of the Board of Trustees in 1999-2000.  He was appointed to the board in 1991 and has served as chair of the Educational Affairs Committee, the Investments Committee, the Affiliated Entities Committee, and the Agricultural Affairs Committee.   He currently serves as chair of the board's Outreach and Engagement Committee and the Personnel Committee. 

A trial lawyer, he graduated in 1961 from The Ohio State University's College of Law where he has established the Michael F. Colley Fund to support the college's trial competition program. He has served as national president of the American Board of Trial Advocates (1997) and president of the Ohio Chapter (1992).  He served as president of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (1978-79), the Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers (1972-73), the Franklin County Trial Lawyers Association (1968-69), and the Roscoe Pound Foundation, Washington, DC (1982-85). Colley was selected by Town and Country magazine as one of the outstanding trial lawyers in America in 1985.

He also served as a member of the Ohio Board of Regents from 1982 to 1986, and as chair of the Ohio Republican Party from 1982 to 1988.  Colley has chaired the Franklin County Republican Party since 1978 and has served as the Republican National Committeeman for Ohio since 1988.   He is the senior partner in Colley Shroyer & Abraham, a professional association of trial lawyers.

Robert S. Dorsey, of Cincinnati, Ohio, served on the Board of Trustees from 1970-72.

Robert M. Duncan, chairman of the board, of Columbus, is a native of Urbana, Ohio, and was appointed to the board in 1998. He is a former Judge of the Franklin County Municipal Court, Justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio, Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, and Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. He is a retired partner of the Jones Day law firm. He also served as vice president, general counsel, and secretary of the board of trustees of The Ohio State University.

Judge Duncan serves on the board of directors of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Newark and is a member of the Ohio Public Defenders Commission.

He earned both his bachelor of science and juris doctor degrees from The Ohio State University.  He is a member of the university's College of Education Hall of Fame and received the honorary degree, Doctor of Laws, from his alma mater in 1979.   

He is the recipient of numerous awards including most recently the Democracy in Action Award from the League of Women Voters and the Julian Sinclair Smith – Celebration of Learning Award from the Columbus Metropolitan Library.

Judge Duncan and his wife, Shirley, and two of his grown children live in Columbus. His youngest daughter resides in New York City.

John F. Havens, of Columbus, Ohio, served on the Board of Trustees from 1977-86, serving as chairman from 1985-86.

Karen L. Hendricks, vice chairperson, of Cincinnati, Ohio, was appointed to the board of trustees in 1999 by Governor Bob Taft. She is retired chair of the board, chief executive officer, and president of the Baldwin Piano & Organ Company.

Prior to joining Baldwin, she was executive vice president and general manager at The Dial Corporation in Phoenix, Arizona. Ms. Hendricks spent almost 21 years at the Procter & Gamble Company, beginning in product development after graduating from The Ohio State University in chemical engineering. In her last two years at Procter & Gamble, she was manager of Worldwide Strategic Planning for the company's expanding global hair care business.

Ms. Hendricks serves on the board of directors of Corn Products International Inc. and the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. She is a member of the Commercial Club in Cincinnati and recipient of the YWCA Women of Achievement Award in Cincinnati in 1997.

Previously, her affiliations include board membership of ACNielsen Corporation and the Columbia Energy Group; trusteeship of the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce; and membership on the Cincinnati Business Committee and the Ohio Business Roundtable.

Ms. Hendricks, a native of Shelby, Ohio, and her husband, Milt, live in Cincinnati, and have four grown children.

D. James Hilliker, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, served on the Board of Trustees from 1975-76 and from 1976-1985, serving as chairman from 1984-85.

John D. Jacob, of Columbus, Ohio, served on the Board of Trustees from 1975-84, serving as chairman from 1984-85.

John W. Kessler, of New Albany, Ohio, served on the Board of Trustees from 1974-75 and from 1986-1995, serving as chairman from 1994-95.

Tami Longaberger, was appointed to the board of trustees in 1996 by Governor George Voinovich. She is president and CEO of The Longaberger Company, which she joined in January 1984 after receiving a bachelor of science degree in business administration from The Ohio State University. The Longaberger Company is the premier U.S. maker of handcrafted baskets and offers other items for the home, all of which reach customers through independent home consultants.

A respected leader and active participant in international, national and statewide affairs, Tami was appointed in 2004 by President George W. Bush to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations' 60th Session of the Commission on Human Rights, held in Geneva. She was chair of the U.S. executive committee for the 2002 Helsinki Women Business Leaders Summit, led by Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, U.S. Ambassador to Finland.  In May 2005 Tami was appoint by President George W. Bush to chair the National Women's Business Council. Tami is a member of the board of directors of The John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy; past chairman of the board of the national Direct Selling Association; member of the Ohio Business Roundtable. She is a member of the board of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, based in Washington, D.C.  

May 2005

James F. Patterson, was named to The Ohio State University Board of Trustees by Governor George Voinovich in 1994, serving as the board’s chair 2002 to 2003. During his tenure on the board, he served on the two Presidential Search Committees that brought Presidents William Kirwan and Karen Holbrook to Ohio State. As chair of the second committee, he worked diligently to include all members and interested parties in the process. He brought the same inclusive skills and work ethic to his chairing of the Board of Trustees. He remains involved in higher education policymaking through his current service on the Ohio Board of Regents.

A 1964 graduate of Ohio State’s then College of Agriculture (now Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences) with a Bachelor of Science in horticulture, Mr. Patterson has remained actively involved with the college, its alumni association, and its extension and research programs. He has helped facilitate several generous gifts to the college that established the C. William Swank Endowed Chair, the Farm Income Enhancement Endowed Chair, and the Nationwide-Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center. He has served as chair of the Ohio State Alumni Advisory Committee and on the support councils of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center and OSU Extension.  He continues to serve as a spokesperson for the changing role of a premier land-grant university that serves not only those in agriculture, but all of Ohio’s citizens.      

At the conclusion of his Ohio State trusteeship, his friends and colleagues honored him by establishing the James F. Patterson Endowment for an Annual Land-Grant Lectureship in 2003. That same year, he received The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Alumni Meritorious Service Award. He is also the recipient of the Alpha Gamma Rho Brother of the Century Award, the Celebration of Youth Ohio 4-H Award, the Ohio Farm Bureau Distinguished Service Award, and The Ohio State University Alumni Association Mershon Award, and the University's Distinguished Service Award.

He and his wife, Nancy, are members of Trinity United Methodist Church in Chesterland and have three grown children, Susan, David, and Bill.

May 2007

Thekla Reese Shackelford, from Gahanna, was appointed to the board by Governor Taft for a term of 5/16/2006 - 5/13/2015.  She is an educational consultant and founded School Selection Consulting in 1978.  She served as president of the national professional association for educational consultants in 1987-88.  Prior to that, she was director of development at the Buckeye Boys Ranch in Columbus.  She is currently serving as chairman of the I KNOW I CAN scholarship board in Columbus, the president of Project GRAD-Columbus, and the secretary-treasurer of Project GRAD-Ohio.  She is also a member of the board of directors of Project GRAD-USA.  She formerly served on the boards of H&R Block, Banc One Corporation, Wendy’s International, and Fiserv, Inc.

The Columbus Foundation elected her as the first woman chair of its Governing Committee.  She has served on numerous community boards and currently is on the board of The Ohio State University Foundation, where she served as chair.  She also has served on the national nominating committee of the United Presbyterian Church.  She taught in the public schools in Tillamook, Oregon, and in Columbus, Ohio.  A major focus for her activities has been all levels of education. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Denison University, her master in arts degree from OSU, and received honorary doctorate degrees from Ohio Dominican College, Denison University and Capital University.

She has received the M.E. Sensenbrenner Award for Community Service, the Christopher Columbus Achievement Award, the Temple Israel Humanitarian Award, the Ronald Reagan Volunteer of the Year Award (presented to her by President Bush in 1990 in conjunction with The President’s Volunteer Action Award), the League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Columbus Democracy in Action Award, the Hannah Neil Champion of Children Award, and the Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year Award.  She has been inducted into the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges’ Hall of Excellence, the Central Ohio Business Hall of Fame, and the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame.

Thekla and her husband, Don, reside in Gahanna, Ohio.  They have three daughters, three sons-in-law, and nine grandchildren.

Howard D. Sirak, M.D., of Bexley, Ohio, served on the Board of Trustees from 1971-80, serving as chairman from 1979-80.

George A. Skestos of Bexley served on the Board from 1992-2001, and served as chairman from 2000-01. He is the founder of the Homewood Corp., a multifaceted building firm that has constructed more than 10,000 multifamily units and over 12,000 single-family homes. 

Mr. Skestos founded the Prince of Peace Foundation, which assists the homeless and underprivileged, and the Salem Lutheran Foundation, which provides scholarships for young men studying to become pastors.  The Columbus Association for the Performing Arts and the Columbus Museum of Art are the other boards on which he is a member.  

Mr. Skestos has degrees in law, business, and an arts and sciences degree from the University of Michigan.  He has also taken courses at Ohio State.

Daniel M. Slane, was appointed to the board in 1997 and served as chairman of the board in 2005-06. He is the founder and co-owner of The Slane Company, Ltd., which develops, owns and operates 88 shopping centers and commercial buildings in 12 states.  The company also owns waste treatment facilities in Europe, manufactures synthetic coal, owns an interstate rail transportation company between the east coast and Ohio, a telecommunication company, and a wood products company. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, the company has offices in New York City, Cleveland, North Bergen, New Jersey; Birmingham, England; Shanghai and Fuzhou, China.

Mr. Slane earned a bachelor of science in business administration degree from The Ohio State University in 1964 and his J.D. degree in 1967. He served two years as a captain in the U.S. Army before receiving his M.A. degree in international law in 1970 from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

He served one year as an assistant prosecuting attorney for Franklin County and two years as a White House staff assistant to President Gerald R. Ford.

From 1990-1998, Mr. Slane served as vice chairman and chairman of the Ohio Building Authority, which finances, constructs, and manages state buildings. From 1991-1999, he chaired the State Board of Building Appeals, which grants variances to the Ohio Basic Building Code. He also sits on the board of directors of Ohio Capital Corporation, which has developed over a half billion dollars of government-subsidized housing projects in Ohio.

In addition, Mr. Slane served on the board of trustees of Hiram College from 1996 to 2001.

Warren J Smith, of Columbus, Ohio, served on the Board of Trustees from 1975-83, serving as chairman from 1982-83.

Zuheir Sofia, served on the board from 1995-2004 and chaired the board during 2003-04. He also serves on the College of Arts & Sciences Advisory Board.  Zuheir Sofia is chairman of Sofia & Company, Inc., a Columbus, Ohio based private investment firm. Sofia & Company provides advisory services in mergers and acquisitions, capital formation, and investment and business strategy. Sofia is president of the Stanbery Group, LLC, a registered investment advisor that provides investment advice to individuals, businesses, and institutional investors. He is also co-managing partner with A. Michael Lipper of L & S Partners, I. LLC. Mr. Lipper is founder and former chairman of Lipper Analytical Services. L & S is a private fund investing in the securities of financial services, as well as diversified equity mutual funds.

Previously, Sofia was president, chief operating officer, treasurer and director of Huntington Bancshares, a $28 billion bank holding company, which he joined in 1971. Sofia's many business, civic, educational, and professional affiliations include serving as a Director of Dominion Homes, Inc., and Lancaster Colony Corporation. He was appointed by Governor Bob Taft to serve a second term on the Ohio Banking Commission. Sofia also serves on the Western Kentucky University Board of Advisors, Foundation Board and in 1998 was elected to Western's Hall of Distinguished Alumni. He is a member of the Chief Executives Organization and World Presidents' Organization. Sofia was founder, past president and chairman of the honorary trustees of the Columbus Council on World Affairs. He also served as chairman of the Columbus Chapter of Young Presidents' Organization, chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Columbus School for Girls, and is an honorary trustee for life and past chairman of the board of trustees of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.

Sofia holds a B.S. degree in economics and business administration from Western Kentucky University. He received an M.A. degree in Economics from Washington University and is a graduate of Rutgers University's Stonier Graduate School of Banking. Zuheir Sofia's wife, Susan, is a graduate of Salem College and was appointed by Governor Bob Taft to serve as Chairman of The Ohio Arts Council. The Sofia's have three children Sarah, Joseph and Zachary.

Student Trustees

Christopher A. Alvarez-Breckenridge, of Blacklick, was appointed to a two-year term as the graduate/professional student trustee by Governor Bob Taft in 2006. He is a graduate of St. Charles Preparatory High School and completed his undergraduate studies at The Ohio State University, receiving a BA in Biology and a BS in Classics.  He is currently pursuing an MD/PhD in the Medical Scientist Program at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Christopher serves on the Fiscal Affairs Committee and the Agricultural Affairs Committee.

During his undergraduate years at Ohio State, Christopher was a member of the College of Medicine’s Early Admissions Pathway and became involved in many of the Universities research and involvement opportunities.  He worked in the Human Cancer Genetics Program where his senior honors thesis examined lipid signaling in breast cancer and he presented his work at several national and international conferences, including Toronto and Sao Paulo.  His research accomplishments and aspirations led him to being named a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar as a sophomore and a Thomas J. Bardos Scholar as a Junior.  His extracurricular involvements also extended to being a member of Sphinx Senior Class Honorary, Vice-President of Sigma Phi Epsilon, President of the Association of Ohio State Class Honoraries, 2004 Homecoming Court, an Honors and University Ambassador, and a trip leader for the Greek Alternative Spring Break trip that served AIDS/HIV patients in New York City.  Christopher’s graduate/professional involvements have included the Council of Graduate Students, University Research Committee, and the Medical Center Master Space Plan Steering Committee.

After the completion of his graduate and professional studies, Christopher hopes to pursue a career as a physician-scientist in translational research in order to bring cutting edge research developments to disease prevention and patient care.

Christopher is the son of David Breckenridge and Carmen Alvarez-Breckenridge of Blacklick, Ohio.

Mark E. Berkman was a student trustee from Bexley, Ohio, from 1996-98 and graduated from the College of Dentistry. As a dental student, Berkman was one of five students to receive the merit-based Steffel Scholarship. Also, he was a winner of the college's O.E. Russell Award of Excellence. He was a member of the American Student Dental Association, American Association of Dental Research, International Association of Student Clinicians-American Dental Association, and is house manager of the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity.

Berkman was one of 10 national winners of the 1996 National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Dental Research Dental Student Award, as well as the winner of several regional and national dental research competitions. He was the first dental student in the nation to be designated a Howard Hughes Research Scholar by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

He came to Ohio State from Bexley High School, where he was valedictorian and a National Merit Finalist. As an honors undergraduate at Ohio State, he was a member of several honor societies including Mortar Board National Senior Honorary, and he was president of Romophos Sophomore Class Honorary. Berkman also served as a member of the board of trustees of OSU Hillel and is a PADI-certified Open Water Scuba Instructor with certified specialties in Wreck, Night, Deep and Rescue Diving.

Mark has his own practice as an Orthodontist in Michigan. June 2006

Chad A. Endsley, from Coshocton, was appointed by Governor Taft as the graduate/professional student trustee to The Ohio State University Board of Trustees in 2004 for a two-year term. He graduated from the Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University in 2006.   Chad served on the Fiscal Affairs, Audit, and Agricultural Affairs Committees of the board, as well as being a member of the Government Relations Advisory Council.

Chad received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree from OSU, majoring in agribusiness and applied economics, with a minor in political science. Chad was recognized as one of the top twenty seniors in the university and was a recipient of the Trustees' Student Recognition Award. He was a member of the SPHINX Senior Class Honorary, Gamma Sigma Delta Agricultural Honorary, and Alpha Gamma Sigma Professional Fraternity. His university service included chairing the Edward S. "Beanie" Drake Student Leader Endowment Fund, chairing the Senior Class Gift Committee for his college, and serving as a board member of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Library Committee. Chad also served a two-year term on the Ohio State Fair Junior Fair Board.

Chad served on the Long Range Planning Committee at the Moritz College of Law and was a member of the Business Law Society. His affiliations include membership of the American, Ohio State, and Student Bar Associations. Chad is the owner of Chad A. Endsley Real Estate.

Chad is an attorney with Chester, Willcox, Saxbe in Columbus. He and his wife, Katy, live in Pickerington, Ohio.

June 2006

Kevin R. Filiatraut was appointed by Governor Taft as the graduate/professional student member of the board of trustees in 2000 and served until 2002. As a student trustee, he served on the Student and Educational Affairs Committee, the Affiliated Entities Committee, the Outreach & Engagement Committee, and the Distance Learning Ad Hoc Committee of the board.

Mr. Filiatraut earned a bachelor of arts degree (cum laude) in history and philosophy from John Carroll University in 1999 and his Juris Doctor degree from the Michael E. Moritz College of Law in 2002.

As an undergraduate student at John Carroll University, he served as president of the student union, vice president of Phi Alpha Theta history honor society, a member of the university planning committee, chairperson of the Student Union Executive Board, a member of the university appeals board, and two-time editor of The Handbook of Student Government.

Mr. Filiatraut is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and works in the Prosecutors Office for Cuyahoga County.

The son of Arthur and Patricia Filiatraut of Upper Arlington, Kevin has five siblings: Kate, Mary, Andrew, Brian, and Sarah.

Yoonhee P. Ha, of Proctorville, was appointed to a two-year term as the undergraduate student trustee by Governor Bob Taft in 2005. She is a graduate of Fairland High School and a member of The Max M. Fisher College of Business Honors Cohort Program. Yoonhee serves on the Academic and Student Affairs Committee and the Agricultural Affairs Committee.

During her time at Ohio State, Yoonhee has served as an orientation leader and as a manager for the Alumnae Scholarship Housing Program. She is currently a volunteer at The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and a member of the Honors Collegium and the Honors Program Student Advisory Board. Yoonhee is also the director of The Ohio Academy of Science’s Student Advisory Council. In 2002, she was 1 of 21 students selected by the American Association for the Advancement of Science to represent the United States at the U.S.-Korea Science and Engineering summer Camp (KUSEC) in South Korea.In 2006, Yoonhee was selected to receive a Harry S. Truman Scholarship,an award made to juniors who are committed to making a difference through public service.

Yoonhee is the daughter of Daesung and Yoosook Ha. She has one sister, Jeehee, and one brother, Chanhee (C.J.).

Paula A. Habib was appointed by Governor Taft and served as the graduate/professional student member of the board of trustees from 2002-04. She graduated from medical student at Ohio State in 2004. Paula served on the Fiscal Affairs Committee, Agricultural Affairs Committee, Student Leadership Committee, Outreach and Engagement Committee, and Research Committee of the board.

Ms. Habib received her B.A. degree in biology (summa cum laude) from Adrian College, with a minor in Spanish. She received the Adrian College Alumni Award to the Outstanding Senior, the Spanish Language Award, and the Miles Peele Senior Award in Biology. She was a member of the Mortarboard, a teaching assistant in both the chemistry and biology departments, and a teacher for Kaplan Test Preparation. She was a student tutor, orientation leader, and admissions associate at Adrian College. Paula conducted medical research at Mott Children's Hospital and Wayne State Medical Center as an undergraduate student, and at the University of Michigan Cancer & Geriatrics Center.

She served a one-year term as president of the American Medical Students Association-OSU Chapter and also was the College of Medicine and Public Health Executive Council secretary. She was an orientation coordinator for the college, was vice president of her first-year medical school class, and was one of two student members of the college's Executive Curriculum Committee.

Paula is a member of Alpha Phi Sorority. She volunteered at various medical facilities and community groups in Michigan and at the Prenatal Clinic of Columbus Health Department and the Physician's Free Clinic in Columbus.

Paula is the daughter of Ahsan and Helen Habib of Michigan, and her sister, Pamela, is an undergraduate student at Ohio State. Paula did her residency in medicine at Northwestern-Evanston Hospital near Chicago, and then spend her residency in radiology at Louisiana State University and The Ohio State University.

Allyson M. Lowe, a Columbus native, was appointed to the Board in 1998 and served until 2000.   She was a Ph.D. candidate in political science, with a major emphasis in comparative politics and a minor in women's studies and graduated in 2002.  Her research interests include Western Europe, the European Union, and gender politics. 

Her service activities at Ohio State included membership on the University Senate, Council of Graduate Students, and several University committees.  She was awarded the Regents' Graduate Fellowship for 1996-1998.

She is a member of the Midwest Political Science Association and the Women's Caucus of the American Political Science Association.

Lowe is a graduate of Miami University ('96; BA, political science), where she served as a student member of the Board from 1994-1996, and was involved in community service and student government. 

She is currently an Assistant Professor, Political Science and Hillman Chair of Women and Politics at Chatham College, Pittsburgh, PA.

Jaclyn M. Nowakowski of Broadview Heights was appointed as the undergraduate student trustee from 1999-2001. As a student trustee, she served on the Student Affairs, Affiliated Entities, and Outreach and Engagement committees of the Board. An honors student and Tradition Scholar, she was very actively involved in the university community.

As an Honors Ambassador, Jaclyn gave residence hall tours to potential honors students and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She was an intern at the Ohio Psychological Association and plans to work on an honors research thesis during her senior year. Jaclyn was also the student co-chair of Make a Difference Day 1999 and 2000, a service project that uniquely brings together students from Big Ten schools during football season for community service and collaboration off the field.

Ms. Nowakowski was a member of Sphinx and Chimes Honoraries, and served as President of Mirrors Sophomore Honorary. She was awarded two Presidential Leadership Citations in Spring 1999 and 2000, and is a recipient of the National Order of Battlefield Commissions scholarship.

Ms. Nowakowski graduated in 1997 from Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School. In June 2001 she graduated from OSU with her undergraduate degree in Psychology. She is pursuing Ph.D degree in Industrial Psychology at Michigan State University.

She is the sister of Mike and Laura and daughter of Gene and Carol Nowakowski.

Emily M. Quick was appointed to the board of trustees by Governor Taft in 2003 for a two-year term. She is a fourth-year business major with a specialization in marketing. Ms. Quick serves on the Government Relations Advisory Council and the Academic and Student Affairs Committee.

Ms. Quick has been a member of the OSU Marching Band since the fall of 2000, and is currently the head squad leader for her row. She is part of the Honors Cohort program for the Fisher College of Business, as well as a Pace Setter Inductee. Ms. Quick serves as a University Ambassador and is a member of Ohio Staters, Inc., a unique service organization on campus. She spent the summer of 2004 working as an intern for Congresswoman Deborah Pryce and she plans to attend law school upon the completion of her bachelor's degree.

Emily is the daughter of Thomas and Alayne Quick of Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Her sister, Sarah, reviews claims for the Ohio MRDD board.

Soraya Rofagha of Powell served as the undergraduate student trustee from 1997-99 and was vice chair of the Student Affairs Committee.  She majored in political science as an undergraduate.  An honors student and student research assistant in a pathology laboratory, she spent the summer of 1998 working in Washington, DC as an intern for Senator John Glenn.

An active undergraduate, she was Recording Secretary of Ohio Staters, Incorporated, a unique service organization dedicated to promoting the welfare and traditions of The Ohio State University. As a member of Ohio Staters, Inc., she co-chaired OSU Contact, a leadership retreat for first and second-year students and is the co-chair of Cans Galore, a large scale canned-food drive for the homeless.

Rofagha is a member of Bucket and Dipper Junior Honorary and served as a Romophos Sophomore Honor Society representative to the Association of Ohio State Class Honoraries.   In 1998, she received a University Presidential Leadership Citation Award and in 1999 was awarded a Truman Scholarship.

Rofagha was a National Merit Distinguished Scholar and a Battelle Scholar who graduated from Columbus School for Girls in 1996.  She is currently attending medical school at OSU.

She is the daughter of Shokrollah Rofagha and Sedigheh Keyhani-Rofagha. Her sister, Rana, also graduated from medical student at Ohio State.

Joseph A. Shultz of DeGraff, Ohio was appointed by Governor Taft as the undergraduate student member of the board of trustees in 2001 for a two-year term. He served on the Academic Affairs, Agricultural Affairs, Athletics, and Student Leadership committees of the board.

An active undergraduate, he was a member of Ohio Staters, Incorporated, a unique service organization dedicated to promoting the welfare and traditions of The Ohio State University. Mr. Shultz was the vice president of Ohio Staters, and was a co-chair of OSU Contact, an overnight leadership retreat for freshman students. Mr. Shultz was an active member of Alpha Tau Zeta Fraternity. He was also linked into the 96th class of SPHINX Senior Honorary in the spring of 2002.

As an honors student in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, he completed an honors project his senior year in the field of applied economics. Mr. Shultz graduated in 1997 from Indian Lake High School. He graduated from The Ohio State University in the spring of 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree, majoring in agribusiness and applied economics, and is attending Cornell University for his master's degree.

He is the son of Bill and Susan Shultz.
